I met Laina long ago in 2005, when we both were attempting to overcome the monumental challenge that is National Novel Writing Month. We stayed in contact ever since, attempting to write more novels in November, just hanging out over coffee, and I watched as she graduated from the University of Alberta, and embarked on some pretty epic adventueres (including a year-long stay in Spain that really made me jealous). When she messaged me early in 2014, asking if I would be interested in photographing her and Patrick’s wedding… well, I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.
The whole day was infused with family and friends, everyone as close as can be, hanging out and talking and playing together like one huge combined family righ from the outset. Laina & Patrick asked if I could arrange a first look in her parents back yard, before the activity of the day swept them away, and it was such a pleasure to be there to witness the pure joy they shared when their eyes met for the first time that day. After that the day became a whirlwind, forst family pictures and then formals down in the River Valley, followed by some more quiet time with just the bride & groom at Mackay Avenue School. Then we headed to the Yellowhead Brewery for the cereony and reception.
Everything about both the ceremony and reception was straight out of the personalities of Patrick and Laina. It was laid back, relaxed, and totally memorable. Their favorite books decorated the tables, Spanish tapas were served for guests to eat, the room was full of conversation and laughter and love, and in the middle of the whole affair, the dance floor cleared so the bride & groom could show off the flamenco dance they had been practicing for just this occassion. What a suprise, what a joy. Thank you so much for making me feel like family for the whole of your day, Patrick & Laina! Congrats!
Working hard to make the day go off without a hitch were the duo of Kristy & Laura, from Kay & Elle Weddings.
I’d also like to specifically thank Oksana Berry from Photography by Oksana for helping me out as second shooter for the day!
